Understanding the Pelvic Floor

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that acts as a hammock to support you bladder, uterus, and rectum. A strong pelvic floor can effectively manage:

  • RSupport of the pelvic organs
  • RContinence of the bladder and bowels
  • RStability of the core and low back
  • RSexual function and pleasure

How the Pelvic Floor Functions

When functioning properly, the pelvic floor maintains healthy function when the pressure of daily activities like sneezing, coughing, and exercising is applied. When this occurs, the muscles contract to support the organs and low back.

The Impact of Childbirth

During pregnancy and childbirth, the pelvic floor muscles experience an array of changes and potential damage that make it difficult for the muscles to properly contract and function. This may include:

  • RStretching and strain from labor
  • RTears or episiotomies
  • RNerve damage to the pelvis or low back
  • RElasticity changes from hormonal changes

Most Common Pelvic Health Challenges

After childbirth, you may not even know that the struggles you’re experiencing are caused by  a weak pelvic pelvic floor. The three most common symptoms of this may include:

Incontinence

Sexual Dysfunction

Back & Pelvic Pain

Understanding Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is a common issue that many women face after childbirth. During pregnancy, the growth of the baby along with hormone changes can stretch and weaken the pelvic floor. Giving birth also contributes heavily to this.

There Are Two Main Types of Incontinence

Stress Incontinence

Leaking urine when coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercising.

Urge Incontinence

A sudden, intense urge to urinate followed by involuntary leakage.

Incontinence can be improved with the help of various exercises. Strength training, flexibility training, and healthy habits can help strengthen the pelvic floor and reduce incontinence.

Sexual Discomfort & Pain

A weakened pelvic floor can lead to physical discomfort during sexual activity. This pain is known as dyspareunia.

Dyspareunia is caused when the pelvic floor muscles are too weak to support the surrounding organs. Vaginal sensitivity can also contribute to this.

Though this discomfort is physical, it can lead to mental and emotional strain. Self-conciousness and anxiety regarding sexual intimacy can intorduce stress into a marriage or relationship, and fear of pain during intimacy can develop. Due to these mental impacts, it is crucial to address this pain early.

Through breathing techniques and certain exercise, the symptoms of sexual dysfunction can be greatly reduced.

Back and Pelvic Pain

The back and pelvis are two common areas of pain after childbirth. Various activites can greatly improve your pain. These activities include strength training, mobility workouts, and breathing mechanics.

Low Back Pain

Persistent pain or sharp ache in the lower back, often made worse by certain movements or positions.

Pelvic Pain

Discomfort in the pelvic area which can be constant or triggered by certain activities like walking, sitting or standing for too long.

Sacroiliac Pain

Pain in the area where the spine meets the pelvis, often felt on one side and can radiate down the leg.

Hip Pain

Discomfort in the hip joints, often related to changes in posture and gait during and after pregnancy.

Get Relief From Pelvic Dysfunction

Every woman’s pelvic floor condition is unique, and most require more targeted exercises for the entire body that go further than just doing Kegels.

Finding the Right Program

Well, it’s tough. There’s a shortage of clinicians, creating a backlog that takes months to be seen. Further complicating the issue, most clinicians don’t accept insurance, costing you $100-$300 per session.

Exercise Can Be Your Solution

Indi is committed to providing you access to expertly crafted programs to help you move and exercise.

Experts like Dr. Mary Roberts.

As one of few Pelvic Health providers, Mary treats countless women who struggle with pelvic dysfunction, many of whom waited months to begin treatment.

In many cases, Mary realized most women would benefit from a targeted program addressing the common causes for pelvic dysfunction – a program that goes beyond Kegels.

This inspired her to create a holistic program entirely dedicated to Pelvic Health. Her program goes beyond simple exercises, focusing on strengthening the pelvic floor, alleviating pain, and improving overall health. Her goal was to not only provide a solution to the lack of accessible care, but to empower women to take control of their pelvic health.

And building from her inspiration, she launched indi’s first program 100% dedicated to pelvic health.
